Mendelssohn - Symphony No. 3 in A major "Scottish" 19 - 29 July 2009
Lady Susana Walton, wife of the renowned English composer, had three great passions during her life: her husband, music, and plants. She found the perfect way to live these three passions in her wonderful villa in the island of Ischia, in the south of Italy. A woman of incredible energy, Lady Walton met some of the greatest figures of the 20th century and, throughout her life, supported young artists inviting them to perform in the amphitheater and chamber music hall built in the gardens of the villa.
It would have been a great experience for Spira’s musicians to meet a person with such charisma; although only a few of us could see her during our stay there, we are all very grateful for the warm hospitality. In Ischia we had the chance to go back to Mendelssohn’s Scottish symphony more than a year after the first time we played it. Maybe some of the notes we played are still echoing in the boat that took us back to Naples at the end of the project…
