It was a rather new experience for a group that spends lots of time rehearsing, not to have the luxury time we usually allow ourselves. In just one day and a half, not only did we have to get comfortable with a piece that quite a few new musicians had not played with us before, but also we had to get very quickly to the detail-work that makes the difference in music like Schubert’s, especially in the case of a “small” symphony like the fifth.
Some of our German musicians were eager to bring Spira north of the Alps, and in May of 2009 we managed to play a mini-project in Mannheim. Since the rehearsal time was short we decided not to perform a piece that was completely new for us and therefore we chose Schubert's Fifth Symphony, which we had already worked on in September 2008.
