Bartok - Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta
20 - 27 January 2010
From our side there was the strong choice of not even trying to hide or avoid that word, but (starting several weeks before the first rehearsal) to study, read, know, and to share a big part of this path with the audience that would have later attended the concerts -in particular with the high school students- exploring together a language and a dimension completely new for us too. A piece that at first sight looked unapproachable, in the end revealed itself -through mathematical formulas, proportions, odd rhythms, folk melodies- as completely immediate, showing that if an effort is required to understand what we don't know, it's important (for us musicians it's a responsibility) to be brave enough to do it.
The project on Bartok forced us to think a lot about the concept of "difficult". The fact that the piece was objectively so difficult to understand, to build up, to listen, to appreciate, scared a lot of people around us.
